Some things you can’t predict. A week ago, while we were camping, we visited Enchantment Park in Leavenworth, WA. They have a pump track there; a pump track is a paved course designed for riding bicycles without pedaling. The boys tried it and, after some literal ups and downs, loved it. So, when we discovered there was a new pump track in Kennewick, we loaded up the bikes on Friday to test it out.
On about the fifth time around, Theo crested a hill, lost his momentum, and began to fall. He instinctively stuck out his right arm to catch himself. As he landed, he felt his bones “pop” and knew something was wrong. We immediately rushed him to the emergency room, they reset his bones, a snapped radius and ulna, placed him in a temporary cast, and we were on our way home.
What comes next is very predictable. The human body is marvelously designed so that, over the next six weeks, its bones, operating on expertly written DNA code, will begin to repair themselves. First, the body forms a blood clot and a soft “cartilage-like” callus to stabilize the break, then specialized cells slowly replace that soft material with hard, strong bone. Over weeks to months, the new bone is reshaped and strengthened until it’s back to full strength.
Some things are unpredictable- others are so expected that all we have to do is wait. Those expected occurrences are made that way because our God, who orchestrates all things, has placed the laws within the universe that govern the way it works- from gravity that holds the solar systems together, to the operation of cells within the human body.
Both Job (Job 10:11) and Psalms (Psalms 139:13-14) point to this wonder of God: as He knits us together in the womb, He will also restore our bones. As Theo’s arm heals, he doesn’t have to try harder; he doesn’t have to send blood cells to the site of the injury. His body has been made to do it. Designed amazingly and predictably by a remarkable God.
Although the world is unpredictable, uncertain, and unstable, God is not. We can know Him and hold onto His Unchanging Hand. Every fiber of our being rests in the predictability and security of the Maker of the universe. That same Designer and Creator tells us that one day He is coming soon.

Like Theo, I don’t have to do anything for God to fulfill His design and promises. I might have to wait, but I know that God is working everything out, and when that happens, we will all be healed.
